It’s Getting Cold

Forget that sunshine out in the real world, Winter is most definitely coming, as proved by a slew of exciting new shots from the set of Game of Thrones Season 7. We’re rooting for the White Walkers here at Geeky Monkey Towers, so we’ve put The Knight King on the front cover – and doesn’t he look fantastic?! Jump over to page 6 to find out all the latest on this penultimate season of the show that rocked TV.

If you’re a comic book fan, then we have a fascinating feature on the men that saved Marvel Comics starting on page 90. We interview Joe Quesada, Bill Jemas, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch on the creation of The Ultimates and how their irreverant approach to these iconic super heroes saved the company and turned it into the pop culture behemoth it is today. If you like your pop culture new, we have The Mummy at the cinema, Guardians of the Galaxy on the PlayStation 4 and quotes from all the big names at Star Wars Celebration 2017 in Orlando.

If you like your pop culture retro, then we have a look back at 1987, I’ve enjoyed rewatching The Fall Guy and we found a great pair of Yoda socks with ears!

We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into every issue of Geeky Monkey (well, there were no tears this month, but the others are true – paper cuts!), so we really hope you enjoy the magazine. There are back issues available from the get-geeky.today website, and we are also on the iOS and Android app stores for downloading – just search “Geeky Monkey”. Enjoy!

WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE GAME OF THRONES SEASON SEVEN WAS TO BE DELAYED UNTIL SUMMERTIME, THE WORLD LET OUT A COLLECTIVE SOB. AFTER SUCH A SATISFYING AND CAPTIVATING ENDING TO SEASON SIX, HOW COULD WE POSSIBLY DEAL WITH SUCH A LONG BREAK? LUCKILY, WINTER IS COMING AND WE’RE NOT SO FAR AWAY FROM THE RELEASE DATE. AND WHILST HBO HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN THEIR PROMOTION OF THE SERIES, WE’VE MANAGED TO LEARN MANY DETAILS ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM JON SNOW, DAENERYS, TYRION AND CERSEI AND HAVE SOME BRAND NEW SHOTS FROM THE SETS TO SHARE WITH ALL GEEKY MONKEYS…

Let’s get the important details out there first. The launch of Game of Thrones season seven on HBO in the States is 16 July, but here in the UK Sky and NowTV will be airing the first episode at two in the morning on 17 July. It’s probably worth staying up till the early hours just to avoid spoilers on Twitter the next day. But why are we having to wait so long? Well according to Casey Bloys, President of Programming at HBO, “Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing.” It makes sense that they would have to accommodate the weather into their shooting schedule. We did get our first look at footage in a small trailer that showed the three biggest contenders striding to their respective thrones as an icy chill descends upon them. The ending gave us a glimpse of a White Walker, reminding us of the larger threat on the horizon.

The trailer did a great job of ramping up the anticipation for what’s to come next. Especially after the huge reveals last season concerning Jon Snow and a certain ‘R+L=J’ theory. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil it if you’ve not caught up yet. With many cast members old and new appearing, we have to start wondering which of them will be on the chopping block this year. After all, Game of Thrones is notorious for killing characters off in dramatic ways. One character we might not have to say goodbye to however, is Samwell. During an interview on Emily Dean’s Walking the Dog podcast, John Bradley (the actor playing Samwell) stated, “The thing about Sam is, if he’s still around at this stage, you do suspect that there is gonna be a point to keeping him around.” Could Samwell turn out to be a narrator set a few years in the future, detailing the entire series as a Maester? It’s possible. Whilst we’re on the subject of Maesters, season seven sees Jim Broadbent join the cast in an unnamed role, but we do know he will be playing a Maester at the Citadel in Old Town, so his screen time will likely coincide with Samwell.

Another addition to the cast will be none other than singer/ songwriter Ed Sheeran in what sounds like an extended cameo appearance. Speaking to Tom Green on The Hits Radio, he spilled all the details about his role, “I just do a scene with Maisie (Arya Stark). I sing a song and then she goes, ‘Oh, that’s a nice song’.” He has previously told the Daily Star that, “I do know which role I am going to play. I don’t die in it, I don’t die. I’m only in it for like five minutes.” Don’t count on him becoming a season regular anytime soon then.

One of the most anticipated things about the new season is seeing characters that haven’t met interact with each other for the first time, and it sounds like there’s going to be plenty of that going on. When speaking to IGN, Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) said, “We’ve had all these disparate stories come from disparate ends of Westeros – and it’s been signaled from the end of last season – that there’s a lot of people and situations going to be coming together. It was kind of interesting to meet some people who I normally only meet on a red carpet. Who that is and when that happens remains to be seen.”

With bigger battles, bigger dragons and even bigger stakes – Game of Thrones season seven is looking promising. We’ve still got a couple of months left to wait for the next seven episodes in the globally acclaimed series, but it’s looking like this season will change Westeros forever. GM
