‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 spoilers: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau confirms start of filming

Just in case you wanted that extra confirmation as to when “Game of Thrones” season 4 was going to officially get going, we have it for you courtesy of a man who would surely know better than anyone else: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The man has tragically seen his role reduced the past few weeks as some other storylines have taken precedence (see the Red Wedding), but pending something shocking in Sunday’s finale, he will probably stick around a while longer.

Speaking to TVLine, the Critics’ Choice TV Award nominee confirmed that the series will officially start filming again next month, presumably in their oh-so familiar environment of Belfast, Northern Ireland. This is where most of their crew hails from, and the soundstages are also present here for them to film their array of interior scenes.

As for where else we could see the cast heading to shoot, that remains somewhat of a mystery. Dubrovnik, Croatia seems to be a given, at least thanks to the fact that King’s Landing is always going to be important to the show. Morocco could be, depending on where Danaerys is placed around the time the new season starts up. As for Iceland, that’s sorely dependent on what happens with a number of characters.

We already imagine that the series is going to have a number of intriguing challenges to face once it moves into season 4: How do you try and recreate the excitement of the Red Wedding, the most devastating event of the series’ history, without feeling cheap or exploitative? It took seasons to build to that, and much of next season could therefore be rebuilding to something incredibly shocking down the road. This event also teaches us that just because we may or may not have read the books, the producers are still at liberty to make changes.
